Introduction
Matt. 28:18f

What is a Disciple?

The Greek word for disciple is used over 250 times in the New Testament. ‘Mathetes’

A taught or a trained one.

A learner or a follower.

Farrar: A Disciple – “One who believes his teachings, rests upon his sacrifice, imbibes His Spirit, and walks in his steps.”

What is the point of being a disciple?
Luke 6:40 To be “Perfect” KJV
“Fully Taught” RSV
The purpose? – To be like our Teacher!

Christian means – Belonging to Christ
The longer we follow him and belong to him the more like Him we should become.

That does not mean we will be sinless.
But it does mean we will sin less.
Matt. 5:48 “You therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

1 Peter 1:15 “As He who called us is Holy, so we are to be Holy in all our conduct.”

What does being a Disciple imply then?
(The Greek word) “It always implies the existence of a personal attachment which shapes the whole life of the one described as disciple.”

Gal. 2:20 “It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me!”
Christ ___ ___!

3. 2 Cor. 5:13-17 “If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old has passed away behold the new has come! Us ___ ________!

4. It implies that we must empty ourselves as Jesus did.
Phil. 2:5-8 Emptied himself🡪 Servant “Have this mind.”

John 13:16 After washing the disciples feet…”Is the disciple above his Teacher?” No!
James 4:6-10 The way to greatness is humility.

What being a disciple is NOT!
It is not the mechanics of doing good things.

Matt. 6:5-8 Empty prayers for show.

Matt. 5:20 Our righteousness is to exceed that of the
self-righteous. (Scribes and Pharisees)

It is not the appearance that is important, but the quality and depth of service. “Putting yourself in the collection plate.”

What being is Disciple IS.
Luke 18:26-30 Giving it all up…and following!

“We have everything to gain and nothing to lose when we give up everything to follow Jesus. We can only be blessed.”

It's Your Turn. Write Something. Say Something.
