Dream Rules

For Creating a Proper Journal

  • 100% honesty! NO embellishments, NO additives when notating a dream.
  • ONLY type what you can remember, nothing more, nothing else. (Okay, you’re right. 1 and 2 are very similar)
  • Make Note of the TIME and DATE of your dream.
  • Make Note of ANYTHING in your life that may have influenced or caused a particular dream to occur.
    • For example, if the day before you touched base with an old friend for the first time in years and then that night you dreamt that you were with them back in high school.
  • Make Note of a Dream ASAP!
    • If you wake and remember a dream, get up and type it up immediately, no matter the time, no matter how tired you are or how much pain you’re in.
    • A dream remembered comes first and foremost, otherwise you risk forgetting it by morning.
    • Each dream for which I’ve typed extensive notes, I’ve spent 30 minutes to an hour standing in the glow of my tablet at 4 in the morning.
  • Attempt to influence your dreams. Before falling asleep at bedtime think of something specific and later discover if you dreamt about it.
      • This is much more difficult than you might believe.
      • Numerous times I’ve tried thinking about the plot, locations and characters in my novel, “Aretherra” before falling asleep. Every time I hoped for some dream-based revelation, or amazing new idea for my book.
      • Not once have I remembered a dream based on my attempted influence.
    • I keep trying to influence and steer my dreams nonetheless.
  • Wake yourself up in the middle of the Night! This is by far the most important aspect when attempting to remember and create an ongoing Dream Journal.
  • Skip the potty break before bed. Getting up to go pee in the middle of the night can wake you out of a deep slumber, giving you a chance to remember a dream.
  • Fall asleep without your blanky. If you’re like me, you sleep best under covers, whether its for warmth or security.
      • Go to sleep uncovered. When your body naturally cools a couple hours later you’ll be cold. Now train yourself to wake just enough to hopefully wake from a dream and remember it.
