Genuine Discipleship Two

Conditions and Characteristics
Of Genuine Discipleship

Condition #1

Abiding in His Word (to live in) John 8:31“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples.”

True discipleship is conditional. “If you abide…”

It is characterized by genuineness. “..truly my disciples.”

Discipleship is characterized by love and dedication.
John 14:15 “If you love me you will keep my commandments.”
1 John 5:3 “This is the love of God that we keep his commandments.”
Abiding not means not having God! 2 John 9

Condition #2

Mutual love for one another. John 13:35
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this will all ment know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

You are my disciples if you love one another.
1 John 3:13&14
1 Corinthians 13

‘The Love Test’
_ is Patient _ is not Boastful
_ is Kind _ is not Arrogant
_ is not Jealous _ is not Rude

Characteristic #1

Fruit Bearing…Involves:

Being Part of Christ John 15:1-8 There is no fruit apart from Christ

Dying to Self John 12:24 &25 There is no fruit without a death first.
(Dying to self…more on this later.)

Denying Self Matt. 26:72 “I do not know the man.”

*Deny Self – “I do not know the old sinful man/woman!”

*Deny God – “I don’t know Him!”
** Every on of us does one of the two. Matt. 6:34 No on can serve two masters. (You and I can not have it both ways.)

Gal. 5:19-24 Fruit Bearing

Characteristic # 2

Cross Bearing

John 12:24 “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”

Luke 9:23 “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

The “Musts” of Genuine Discipleship

We must have an absolute love, heart, and commitment to Jesus Christ.
Luke 14:25-33

This must be an unrivalled commitment. (including family!)
Vs. 26 What happens if someone says, “I’m through with Jesus?”

This even includes our own life!
We have to love Jesus more than our own life? A tough one!

We must bear our own cross. Luke 14:27
“Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me can not be my disciple.”

“Lord knows I have my cross to bear.” But the cross is NOT a physical, economic, or family problem!

It IS talking about self-crucifixion…a daily dying to self!

Gal. 5:23&24 Crucifixion of fleshly passions and lust.

Gal. 6:14 Being crucified to the world.
You can not get a dead man to sin! You can wave booze cigarettes, and playboy magazine in front of him all day long and he is not going to sin!

We must renounce all that we have.
Luke 14:33 “Whoever of you does not renounce all that he has can not be my disciple.”

Being a disciple will cost you everything!

b. Becoming a disciple is dependent on our willingness to renounce all that we have.

It's Your Turn. Write Something. Say Something.
