This marvelous peace is exactly the blessing which troubled man most needs and so incessantly seeks, even if his seeking is but an unfulfilled subconscious longing after it.
By its very nature any religious image is false, being a lying, man-made, presentation of what is allegedly represented.
In the earthly life of our Lord, the wonder of Bethlehem and the angelic announcement of a Saviour born culminated in the far more wonderful event of Jesus’ death and resurrection for the salvation of mankind. The best wine came last.
The new commandment, on the other hand, is based on a new principle, measured by a higher standard than love of self.
This is based on Christ’s love, which was self-abandoning and self-sacrificing love.
Christ came not to destroy but to fulfill the Law (Matthew 5:17), and yet, “He took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross” (Colossians 2:14).
